Technical & Academic Efforts: 9/06 - 9/08

-
On 8/4/06,
I gave Phoenix Internet, a small family owned ISP, four weeks
notice in order to pursue IT skill development opportunities and
a possible bachelor degree.
Despite the job description
(7/22/06,
... ,
2/2/08,
11/25/08,
1/7/09,
7/27/09,
8/3/09),
the position was primarily administrative clerical, i.e. order
processing, billing, AR past due account tracking, and service
installation scheduling. During this time, I also provided
customer technical support, troubleshooting assistance,
procedure documentation, and other technical related services.
Still, IT skill
development
opportunities
were
extremely
limited
since
higher
technical
positions
were occupied by family
members.

8/05–1/07:
Studied
three Cisco Press CCNA 640-821 INTRO exam books, various
related materials, and created additional quizzes with exam
software in
order to take the CCNA 640-821 INTRO exam.

-
After not passing the
CCNA 640-821 INTRO exam, I emailed
the Cisco Press and Cisco
Networking Academy executive
editors a copy of the following document detailing my exam
preparation and taking experience. The Cisco Press
executive editor acknowledged that there was no Cisco Press CCNA study material
at that time that was up to date enough to help pass the newer exam criteria.
He then offered and sent me a free copy of
the official Cisco
Press CCNA
640-801 exam certification guide library for study and
review.

-
Asked by the Cisco Press executive editor to
review the official Cisco Press CCNA self-study books and provide
commentary. Provided the executive editor with a detailed 40
page critique of the
official Cisco Press 640-821 INTRO exam book study material.
The executive editor was impressed and pleased with the depth and
detail of the feedback.
Based on:
-
The Cisco
Press executive editor agreeing there was
"no self-study material
out
there today that matches the difficulty of
the actual exam".
-
Studying the most current Cisco Press books
available at the time.
-
Practicing router and switch network setup
configurations.
-
Creating more exam topic quizzes for
additional preparation.
-
The website for the Cisco Press
official CCNA
INTRO Exam Certification Guide (CCNA
Self-Study, 640-821, 640-801) not having
updated material available to study and prepare for the new
exam criteria:
The Downloads section did have
the
New Appendix D: CCNA INTRO Exam
Updates
(PDF)
dated 5/31/05, but it didn't contain
anything remotely similar
to the new exam
criteria. What it did cover were very
basic concepts I found
hard to believe were
giving people trouble.
-
Cisco
Press books for the new CCNA 640-822 ICND1 exam not due
until the fall of 2007.
-
Cisco Networking Academy: CCNA Exploration curriculum
not due until the fall of
2007 to prepare students for the
new
CCNA 640-802 (822,816) certification exam.
I decided to re-direct my efforts
towards Rio Salado Community College courses
transferable to a DeVry University B.S. degree.

-
Researched DeVry University-Phoenix’s
Network Communications Management (NCM) BS program vs. Arizona State
University East’s Computer Systems Administration (CSA) BS program.

-
Enrolled in Rio Salado Community College online courses to save money and achieve credit for courses
transferable to DeVry University-Phoenix.

The following assignments
used to have hyperlinks to them in order to provide
and idea of their complexity and my quality of work.
Unfortunately, the publisher
Cenage recently sent me a DMCA NOTICE OF COPYRIGHT
INFRINGEMENT on 11/8/10.
Obviously, it was due to the fact that I'm trying to cash in
on their Intellectual Property
and contribute to the delinquency of aspiring university and
college plagiarists everywhere.
So, this is as much information as I can give, which is
comparable to looking in the
book's table of contents.

Currently reading:
CompTIA
A+ Exam Prep
(Exams A+ Essentials,
220-602, 220-603, 220-604)
by Charles J. Brooks Paperback: 1464 pages
Published: May 28, 2008 Publisher: Exam Cram
Why am I reading this book if I
have years of experience? Well, for some people,
passing two certification exams totaling $336 means more than 10+ years
of building, troubleshooting, and maintaining
PCs and peripherals totaling thousands of dollars.
Also, I don’t want to take any chances that
there might be something on the exam I don’t
know. Based on a previous certification
exam preparation and taking experience, you
can’t be too cautious.
